Has owned 8 bike racks in 12 years, including the trunk strap that scratched her paint, the hanging rack that swung into a highway divider, and the tray rack that survived a deer strike. She measures installation time, wobble at 75 mph, and how long it takes to load a bike in the dark after a long ride.

Who's Behind This

Simone, based in Boulder, Colorado, has been testing bike racks for years. Every review on this site comes from hands-on time with the actual product — not spec sheets.

What We Believe

• A bike rack is safety equipment, not cargo gear. I've watched a $60 rack launch a $4,000 bike onto a highway.
• Tray racks over hanging racks, always, unless you ride a step-through or a fat bike.
• The hitch is the platform. A 1.25-inch hitch limits you to 2 bikes and a lot of wobble; 2-inch is the real standard.
• Installation time is a spec. A rack that takes 30 minutes to mount gets used half as often.
